NIU Environmental Sustainability Zone (English version)

Materializing Climate Action

Prospective Management of Systematic Implementation

Established in 1926 as an agricultural-based school, National Ilan University is nearly one hundred years old. We have been transformed from vocational school to technical college, setting the educational ground that is business- and technology-oriented. Furthermore, with our expertise in the leisure industry, biology industry, green energy technology and smart agriculture, we are able to assist local farmers in local agricultural development. Faced with the global climate change, our school aims to help the global goal of limiting the earth’s temperature rise within 2 degrees Celsius. To reach this goal, our school actively builds up a sustainable campus with, including measures such as environmental sustainability, ecological friendliness, smart recycling, energy management, safety and health, and environmental education, etc. Apart from the aforementioned measures, we have also built-up pollution prevention and resource regeneration facilities, which demonstrates our good operation, maintenance, and management. Our university’s operating standards are based on the strategies in terms of Environment, Society and Governance (known as ESG) which follows.

Environmental Protection (E, Environment)

Materializing environmental protection

Recycling resources

  • Constructing smart water resources management system
  • Replacing the old with the new
  • Improving resource recovery rate
  • Enhancing waste management
  • Establishing campus environment real-time monitoring system

  • Controlling indoor air quality effectively
  • Regular inspection
  • Implementing chemical waste reduction

  • Replacing new purchases with second-hand chemicals
  •

    1. Materializing environmental protection
    2. Recycling resources: Since 2014, the school has employed a rainwater recycling system to contribute to toilet cleanliness, gardening and so on. We have also built teaching demonstration sites, so that students can understand the benefits of rainwater recycling and reuse, and learn to cherish water resources.
    (1) Constructing a smart water resources management system.
    (2) Continuing to improve old and energy-consuming facilities and replace air-conditioners that have been in use for more than 10 years.
    (3) Enhancing the garbage classification labeling to facilitate garbage reduction, increase resources recycling rate and instructing resettlement and update of temporary garbage storage facilities.
    (4) Enhancing waste classification and management: Apart from the four basic waste classifications("general waste", "general industrial waste", "hazardous industrial waste", and "kitchen waste"), new waste classifications are added ("edible oil" and "abandoned facilities”)to further increase waste reuse rate.
    3. Establishing a “campus environment real-time monitoring system” to ensure campus air quality
(1)To make sure the on-site staff, teachers and students’ health and safety, air quality inspections are regularly carried out in the library and nursery every year.
(2)In addition, manufacturers certified by the Environmental Protection Agency are regularly invited to perform regular indoor air quality inspections in the library every two years.
    4. Implementing chemical waste reduction: Promoting the environmental protection policy of replacing newly purchased chemicals with second-hand ones in campus laboratories to reduce waste chemical storage and disposal costs and reduce expenditures for new chemical purchases.

    Social Responsibility(S,Social)

    1. Employee health and safety
    (1) Occupational health services:
    Hazard assessment and health guidance.
    Injury consultation and health management.
Work suitability assessment and job redesign.
    2. Education and training
    (1) Environmental education training: at least 4 hours every year.
    (2) Occupation safety and sanitation education training: at least 3 hours every three years.

    Employee health and safety

    Occupational health services:

  • Hazard assessment and health guidance.
  • Injury consultation and health management.
  • Work suitability assessment and job redesign.

    School Governance(G,Governance)

    Optimizing smart governance

  • Intelligent network information control
  • Establishing ISO50001 Energy Management System

Managing contract electricity consumption monitoring and demand management

Setting up digital meter & central control power system

Contract electricity consumption monitoring and demand management

    Implementing water-saving measures on campus

    Promoting laboratory classification management

    Establishing laboratory chemical QR code

    1. Optimizing smart governance: Our school has set up a power recorder or a regional power management system in each building. The smart network information monitoring and management system is adopted to automatically collect the power consumption of each unit. The electricity usage conditions will be announced at the administrative meeting to achieve energy-saving warning effects.
    2. Establishing an ISO50001 energy management system: Our school has clarified the energy use situation of each area in the campus through taking inventory and collecting energy consumption data of various equipment. Consequently, we are able to understand the current energy use status of each area and target more energy-consuming systems and equipment to materialize our school's energy-saving goals.
    3. Managing contract electricity consumption monitoring and demand: We aim to achieve energy and electricity saving goals under reasonable energy usage.
    4. Setting up a digital meter and a central control power supply system: We have set up automatic power-saving devices in the classroom. Besides, we have also implemented streetlight use sensors and controllers incorporated into the central control system.
    (1) Green building design saving energy is adopted for new construction, additional construction, reconstruction or renovation projects.
    (2) We have planned the equipment improvement projects of the central air-conditioning system of each unit, replacing the load rate of the power supply transformers of the whole school with energy-saving function, the construction of solar power systems, the annual replacement of traditional lamps, the reuse of water recycling systems, and the continuous promotion of fuel-saving measures.
    (3) According to the announcement of the Central Meteorological Bureau, from January to April and from October to December each year, once the temperature reached 28°C on the given day, the air-conditioners in the office and classrooms of the campus can be turned on.
    5. Implementing water-saving campuses: We plan to install (or replace) water-saving equipment, and set up planning rainwater storage tanks to collect or recycle rainwater as well as domestic miscellaneous drainage. Therefore, we could replace flushing water or irrigation water, and reduce reliance on tap water to achieve the goal of comprehensive water conservation.
    6. Promoting the classification management of laboratories: According to the classification of each laboratory, we will conduct regular counseling inspections to control and reduce the occurrence of laboratory hazard accidents.
    7. Establishing a QR Code system for laboratory chemicals: We will establish a unique QR-CODE for each laboratory. Through scanning the code, we could get the emergency contact information, internal floor planning, real-time chemical list, hazard characteristics (for example: showing water-proof substances) and SDS.
